National Institute of Immunology (NII) is an autonomous research institute located in New Delhi. It works under the Department of Biotechnology for research in immunology. It was established on 24th June 1981. Prof M.G.K Menon as the Chairman of its governing body. A first of its kind vaccine for leprosyin India have been developed by NII and it was named as mycobacterium indicus prani.
The Institute was formally dedicated to the Nation by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on 6th October, 1986. NII grew into a vibrant research institution. The institute was with several active research groups, doctoral students, post-doctoral fellows and supported by state of the art infrastructure became a prime research institution in the country.
