About Gauhati Medical College and Hospital Assam:
GMCH came to existence on 20th September 1960, it is the second medical college to be established in Assam. GMCH provides medical education at undergraduates, postgraduate and superspeciality levels. Gauhati Medical College and Hospital Assam is also a health care institution. with increaing demands for health care and health edcuations the need for more medical colleges in Assam was felt. so that state government started the colleges with preclinical classes in the vacant building of the ayurvedic college.
The government of Assam constructed the permanent buildings of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital on the Narakachal hill. Courses offered in GMCH are MBBS, MD/MS and Diploma postgraduate medical courses. DM and M.ch courses are also offered. On 7th Nov 1959 the state government set up an expert committes to go into the matter and submit their report. General Medical Council of U.K recognized the bachelores degree of this college in 1969, thereby enabling the graduate to pursue higher studies in that country.
